EAST LANSING – The following statement can be attributed to MEA President Paula Herbart regarding the passing of Brian Whiston, Michigan’s state superintendent of public instruction:
“Brian Whiston was, above all else, a good person who will be missed by all who knew him. Everything he did as our state superintendent grew from his strong belief in the power of public education to change students’ lives. He was, first and foremost, an educator.
“Many of us at MEA worked closely with Brian over the years and we respected his leadership and his vision, even on the occasions when we disagreed. On behalf of all of us who worked with and knew him, as well as all the members of the Michigan Education Association who benefitted from his service to our students and our state, I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones and wish them peace during this difficult time.”
