The evening before, school employees across the state will be gathering for “Flashlight Vigils” across Michigan. Our goal is to “Shine a Light” on the case and the faces of educators who are owed more than $550 million illegally taken from them 7 years ago.

MEA, along with our sisters and brothers at AFT Michigan, are working on two ways for school employees to get informed and involved ahead of the Supreme Court’s Nov. 8 hearing on the long-running 3 percent lawsuit – including “flashlight vigils” to show the faces of those affected by the case.

MEA lawyers filed a brief this week with the Michigan Supreme Court in support of the union’s 2010 lawsuit seeking the return of money taken from school employees’ paychecks to fund retiree health care.
One year ago, Lansing teacher Deborah McMillan pressed Gov. Rick Snyder to stop appealing the 3 percent retirement court case. The 40-year veteran teacher was a lead plaintiff in the 2010 lawsuit seeking the return of money involuntarily taken from school employees’ paychecks.
We still don’t know the substance of a coming attack on the school employee pension system, but we know it’s coming – and we’ve also learned Republican leaders plan to move quickly once legislation is introduced.
That means we need to be quicker.
We need to start calling and emailing state House and Senate lawmakers NOW to oppose this latest effort.
Closing off new employees to a defined benefit system would cost billions of dollars, leave dedicated educators without a secure retirement, and worsen the growing teacher shortage.
